About The Class:

Hip Hop Improv 101

This 8 week musical improv class will get you comfortable and confident with freestyle rapping and will teach you how to weave your rapped verses in and out of your scenes. You’ll get a feel for rhyme scheme basics, creating musical and rhythmic hooks, and you’ll learn three different ways to get into a hip hop improv song. Good scene-work is imperative to good musical improv; let’s drill into the deal of your scene and its’ characters so you can learn how to set yourself up, find your flow, and rap from a place that matters.

About the Workshop:

Musical Improv can be charming, beautiful and entertaining, but sometimes you gotta give it that OOMPH! Rapping the bridge of your song is an amazing opportunity to surprise the audience, get some sweet rhymes in, and go deeper into your character's deepest fears, motives, and philosophies. This workshop will also contain exercises that will demystify what to sing about in your verses, so that your songs can contain a focused message.

Everybody knows that Jay-Z don’t flow like Migos, and Drake’s style ain’t like Kendrick’s. In this this freestyle workshop, we are going to focus on flow and staying on beat. A good flow can be the difference between an alright song and a truly memorable one. This workshop will provide you with the tools to try new rhythms and styles, get out of your comfort zone, and therefore, make your hip hop improv more surprising and entertaining.

Steve Jeanty is a Long Island comedian, writer and rapper who has been performing improv since 2011. He's learned from a ton different performers from UCB, The PIT & The Annoyance. You can find Steve performing with his indie team, Ski Legend on every first Monday of the month at Dixon Place & with North Coast every Saturday at the PIT theater. You can also find Steve at any organic ice cream shop doing his damn thang. Follow him on twitter @stevejeanty
